2018 BMW M5 F90 – The Crown Prince of the Super Sedan World

Hailing from Bavaria in southern Germany, the BMW M5 F90 embodies the legacy of excellence that BMW has built over decades. With its roots firmly planted in innovation and engineering, BMW has not only captivated Europe but also the vast landscapes of Asia, the bustling streets of America, and even the quieter regions of Africa. Carrying the M5 badge, the F90 emerges as a regal contender in the world of super sedans, a crown prince designed to reign supreme.

BMW’s Storied Legacy and the Birth of the M Division

BMW, established in Munich in 1916, initially focused on manufacturing airplane engines and motorcycles. The company only ventured into car production after World War II, restarting operations in 1952. By this time, competitors like Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Audi were also making their mark in Germany, accompanied by the rise of motorsport events like the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In a bid to gain motorsport prestige, BMW introduced the M1, a car specially designed for racing. Though regulatory hurdles initially kept it from competing, the company’s persistence gave birth to the M Division—a specialized unit focused on performance vehicles. The first fruit of this division, the E28 M5, debuted in 1985. Hand-built and powered by a 3.5L inline-6 engine producing 286 horsepower, it was recognized as the fastest sedan of its time.

Evolution of the M5: From E28 to F90

Building on the success of the E28, BMW’s M Division continued to innovate. The E34 M5 Touring, introduced in the late 1980s, became the first M Division wagon, proving BMW’s ability to merge practicality with performance. In 1998, the E39 M5 brought V8 power to the lineup, followed by the E60 in 2005, featuring a 5.0L V10 engine with 507 horsepower and a 7-speed manual gearbox.

By 2011, the F10 M5 marked a shift towards efficiency, pairing a 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 with improved fuel economy. This trend of balancing performance with innovation set the stage for the introduction of the F90 M5 in 2018.

The BMW M5 F90: A Masterpiece of Modern Engineering

The F90 M5 is powered by a 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces a staggering 600 horsepower. With peak power available between 5,600 and 6,700 RPM, the engine delivers explosive performance, propelling the car from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, but the car’s ability to reach this effortlessly showcases its engineering brilliance.

For the first time in the M5’s history, the F90 features BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, equipped with a Limited Slip Differential (LSD). This system ensures optimal traction and handling, making the F90 not only fast but also exceptionally stable and responsive, whether on a racetrack or winding roads.

A Royal Presence on the Road

What sets the F90 apart is its ability to combine the raw excitement of a sports car with the practicality and luxury of a sedan. From its aggressive exterior design to its tech-laden interior, the F90 M5 is a car that commands attention while offering unparalleled comfort and convenience.

With its blend of power, precision, and prestige, the 2018 BMW M5 F90 truly earns its title as the crown prince of the super sedan world. It stands as a testament to BMW’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of performance while respecting its storied legacy.
